The Ark have challenged five Irish designers to design and make new products for children. Discover their process in our free exhibition and get designing yourself in a series of workshops exploring design in a child's world. Part of Irish Design 2015.
A Room of your Own
Design and create your own 3D space as part of a newly designed city in this workshop for Ages 5-7. In this session, artist Jane Groves will encourage you to create the realms of your imagination using a selection of found and recycled materials. You are invited into The Ark’s evolving city of cardboard, a playful space where you can design and make a room of your own. Each child will be given a box to create a 3 dimensional living space using recycled materials.
Fabric Design Workshop
In this workshop, learn to design and make your own block printed repeat animal pattern onto fabric, taking inspiration from Print Block’s printed soft toy designs featured in the exhibition. Firstly, you will playfully experimenting with different ways of creating patterns - exploring colour and tone, shape, texture, pattern and rhythm. Then you will learn how to develop a simple animal design suitable for repeat printing and make your own printing blocks.
Design It Exhibition & Workshop
The Ark have challenged five Irish designers to design and make new products for children, taking inspiration from iconic children’s toys, furniture and textiles. The Design It exhibition will chart each designer’s individual working practices, using their sketches, photographs and working prototypes, to reveal how they get from an initial idea to the final product. Following the tour, your class will take part in a creative workshop with artist Jo May.
