A Retro guide to perfecting the 1950’s look
As Coco Chanel once said, “If a woman is badly dressed, people notice her dress. If a woman is well-dressed, it is her that people notice.” If you’re a fan of the 1950’s look, you’ll know that it takes a few layers to make the look complete and really emulate that true vintage style. Step this way to Retro in Georges’ Street Arcade for some ultimate throwback fashion threads.

Layer your look in petticoats, sometimes called underskirts. The ladies in Retro really know a thing or two about petticoats – you can get them in every conceivable colour of the rainbow from the back wall. All the petticoats are designed to give extra volume to the full skirts that adorn many of their vintage dresses. While it isn’t essential to wear one, the underskirts frame the 1950’s dresses and do add a finishing touch that compliments the vintage look and they add a fantastic effect when twirling or dancing the night away.

A common misconception with the 1950’s look is that heels are often believed to be necessary. This isn’t always the case, as ballet pumps with or without peep-toes, ankle boots, loafers, or flat lace-ups can also accentuate and evoke the era whilst providing comfort. There are of course some styles which look best with heels, but it isn’t always essential.

Some essentials we would recommend for any outfit would be your favourite red lipstick, eyeliner and mascara. Often it is an understated look that really highlights the glamour of the 1950’s era.
This is how we styled the looks for the Rock n Roll Music Festival on Dame Court using fashion from Retro in George’s Street Arcade with hair from Preen on Dame Street and make up styling from Make Up For Ever on Clarendon Street.
