Book of Kells & The Old Library
The name Book of Kells is derived from the Abbey of Kells in Kells, Co. Meath, which was its home for much of the medieval period. The date and place of production of the manuscript has been the subject of considerable debate but generally believed to be created by Celtic monks ca. 800 or slightly earlier. Visitors to the Old Library in Trinity College enter through the Library Shop and proceed to the Book of Kells – Turning Darkness into Light exhibition; then to the Treasury where the Book of Kells and other related manuscripts are on view.
